We are deeply grateful for John’s decades of wisdom, leadership, and open-hearted generosity. The Foundation remains committed to honoring his memory by protecting the fish and wildlife of the state he loved so dearly.

In Memoriam (1944 – 2026)
The Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Foundation (OWCF) mourns the loss and celebrates the extraordinary life of John D. Groendyke. A lifelong resident of Enid, Oklahoma, John was a pillar of the business community, a visionary entrepreneur, and a devoted family man. Above all, he was an unmatched champion for Oklahoma’s public lands and the fish and wildlife that calls our great state home.
Until his passing on June 13, 2026, John was a deeply valued member and avid supporter of the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Foundation. His legacy is woven into the very fabric of our state’s conservation achievements.
John Groendyke’s dedication to wildlife conservation was historic. In 1974, Governor David L. Boren appointed John to the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission.
What followed was an unprecedented 44 years of continuous, unpaid service on the Commission, making him the longest-serving wildlife commissioner in United States history.
Throughout his tenure, John earned the profound respect of leaders from across the political spectrum, continuously reappointed by seven consecutive Oklahoma governors. In December 2016, Governor Mary Fallin issued a formal citation celebrating his historic 40th anniversary on the Commission, officially declaring December 13, 2016, as “Commissioner John Groendyke Day”.
As a legendary, world-class bird hunter, John held a special reverence for the Northern bobwhite quail. He translated this passion into action as the Chairman and long-standing member of the Board of Directors for the Grand National Quail Club and Foundation, helping pioneer the annual Grand National Quail Hunt in Enid.
In October 2020, John was honored with the prestigious National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative’s Fire Bird Award. The award recognized his masterful ability to unite diverse factions like Quail Forever, Oklahoma State University researchers, and state wildlife biologists into a unified front dedicated to upland bird research and habitat restoration.
John’s immense contributions did not go unrecognized by the Foundation. On October 29, 2021, the OWCF hosted its inaugural Oklahoma Conservation Hall of Fame banquet and fundraiser in Oklahoma City.
It was only fitting that John D. Groendyke was named the very first inductee into the Conservation Hall of Fame.
John Groendyke’s lifetime of generosity reached every corner of local and state life. Even in his passing, John’s family requested that contributions be directed to the Foundation to ensure that his lifelong mission of conserving Oklahoma’s natural beauty and outdoor heritage endures for generations to come.
